Compare insulation type, fill power for down, total insulation amount when listed, baffle construction, outer-fabric weather resistance, weight and intended activity. Choose breathable active insulation for movement and higher loft for lower-output cold conditions.

Down usually offers better warmth-to-weight and compressibility, while synthetic insulation can retain more useful warmth when damp. Fill power measures down efficiency, not total jacket warmth. Baffle design and insulation distribution also affect cold spots and heat retention.
