Water-repellent hiking pants are designed to shed light rain, splashes and wet vegetation while remaining more breathable than waterproof overtrousers. They are useful for changeable conditions when sustained heavy rain is not expected.

Compare DWR treatment, fabric weight, drying speed, stretch, abrasion resistance and ventilation. A quick-drying fabric is important because water repellency can eventually be overwhelmed. For rough terrain, prioritize durability as well as weather resistance.

Water-repellent is not the same as waterproof. DWR helps droplets bead on the surface, but the fabric and seams do not create a full storm barrier. For prolonged rain, carry waterproof pants; for light moisture and active hiking, water-repellent pants often feel more comfortable.
