Softshell clothing prioritizes stretch, breathability and comfort while offering protection from wind and light moisture. It is ideal for active hiking, climbing and changeable but not continuously wet conditions.

Compare wind resistance, breathability, stretch, abrasion resistance, fabric weight and DWR treatment. Lighter softshells suit high-output movement; denser fabrics provide more warmth and wind protection but release less heat.

Softshell is not the same as waterproof hardshell. A softshell feels more breathable and flexible, while a hardshell provides stronger rain protection. Many outdoor users wear softshell in fair conditions and carry a lightweight waterproof shell as backup.
