Hardshell pants protect the lower body from sustained rain, wet snow and strong wind. They are especially useful on exposed routes, winter trips and long days when soaked hiking pants would quickly become cold and uncomfortable.

Compare waterproofing, breathability, seam sealing, side-zip length, reinforcement and fabric durability. Long side zips make the pants easier to put on over footwear and improve ventilation, while reinforced cuffs help resist damage from boots, rocks or equipment.

Waterproof overtrousers and softshell pants are not interchangeable. Hardshell pants prioritize storm protection; softshell pants usually provide better airflow and everyday comfort. Many outdoor users carry lightweight waterproof pants and wear softshell or hiking pants underneath.
