Hard Shells
Waterproof outer layers
Before washing
Empty pockets and close zippers, snaps and hook-and-loop fastenings. Remove loose dirt with a damp cloth or soft brush. Wash detachable parts separately according to their own care labels.
Wash
Use a mild liquid detergent or a cleaner suitable for waterproof technical garments. Do not use bleach or fabric softener. If hand washing is permitted, use water no warmer than 40°C / 104°F, soak briefly for about 10 minutes and gently clean dirty areas without scrubbing hard or twisting. If machine washing is permitted, select a cold, gentle cycle and use a laundry bag where appropriate. Avoid high-speed spinning.
Dry & restore water repellency
Air-dry in the shade with good ventilation. Press gently with a clean towel to remove excess water; do not wring. Avoid direct sun, radiators and high heat. Only tumble-dry or apply heat to restore a water-repellent finish if the garment label explicitly allows it. If needed, use a compatible DWR treatment and follow both the treatment instructions and the garment label; there is no single heating time suitable for every shell.
Store
Store clean and completely dry, preferably hanging without heavy items pressing on the fabric. Keep away from chemicals and mothballs. Clean when dirty or when performance declines rather than following a fixed annual washing limit.

Sun Protection Clothing
Lightweight coverage for outdoor days
Wash
Separate colors. Use a mild detergent and water no warmer than 30°C / 86°F. For hand washing, soak briefly for about 5 minutes, then gently work on stained areas. Avoid strong rubbing, stretching or twisting. If the label permits machine washing, use a laundry bag and a gentle cycle.
Rinse & dry
Rinse thoroughly to remove detergent. Gently press out water and air-dry in the shade with good ventilation. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight while drying. Use a low-temperature tumble-dry setting only when the garment label allows it.
Keep in mind
Care requirements depend on the fabric and any finish. Do not assume that every sun protection garment has a waterproof coating. Avoid harsh cleaners, and follow the product-specific care label.

Padded & Insulated Jackets
Non-down filled outerwear
Before washing
Check the care label and filling composition first. This section covers padded jackets; use the Down Jackets guide for down-filled products. Spot-clean small stains where possible.
Wash
Use a mild detergent without bleach. Wash in cool water no warmer than 30°C / 86°F. If hand washing is permitted, gently press the garment rather than scrubbing or twisting. If machine washing is permitted, select a gentle cycle and avoid prolonged or high-speed spinning. Rinse thoroughly.
Dry
Reshape and dry flat in a shaded, well-ventilated place. Avoid leaving a heavy, wet jacket hanging for a long time. Do not wring or expose it to direct sun or a heater. Tumble-dry on low only if the care label explicitly permits it; otherwise air-dry completely.
Maintain & store
Once dry, gently redistribute the filling by hand. If persistent clumping remains, seek advice from a professional cleaner experienced with insulated garments. Store in a clean, dry place and avoid sharp objects that could damage the outer fabric.

Soft Shells
Flexible outer layers
Spot-clean first
Wipe small stains with a damp cloth and a little mild liquid detergent. Focus on cuffs and collars to reduce unnecessary full washes.
Wash
Use a mild detergent without bleach or fabric softener. Hand wash gently in cool water or, if permitted by the label, machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle. Keep the water at or below 30°C / 86°F and wash separately from items that may snag the fabric.
Dry & care
Reshape and dry flat or hang in the shade, as the garment label allows. Avoid high heat and direct sunlight. Do not tumble-dry or iron unless the care label permits it; use only the specified low setting when allowed.

Quick-Dry Clothing
Lightweight activewear
After use
Wash after sweaty or muddy activities rather than leaving the garment damp for a long time. Separate light and dark colors.
Wash
Use a mild detergent without bleach or fabric softener. Keep water at or below 40°C / 104°F, or use the lower temperature shown on the label. Gently hand wash without twisting or pulling. For machine-washable items, use a gentle or sportswear cycle. Avoid prolonged soaking.
Dry
Reshape and air-dry flat in the shade with good ventilation. Avoid direct sunlight and high heat. Do not tumble-dry or iron unless the garment label explicitly permits it.
Maintain & store
For garments with special finishes, use only compatible care products specified for that fabric. Store completely dry in a clean, ventilated place.

Wool & Wool Blends
Including wool–lyocell blends
Wash gently
For the garments covered by this guide, hand wash in cool water no warmer than 30°C / 86°F; do not machine wash or use hot water. Use a small amount of wool-suitable, mild detergent. Gently press soiled areas without rubbing or stretching. Fold delicate cuffs, collars and hems inward before washing.
Remove water
Do not wring, spin-dry or tumble-dry. Gently press out water, then place the garment on a clean towel and press gently to absorb moisture.
Dry & reshape
Reshape carefully and dry flat. Do not hang a wet wool garment, as its weight can stretch the knit.
Finish & store
If ironing is permitted, use the label's low wool setting with a pressing cloth. Avoid direct high heat. Fold and store only when completely dry; gentle handling helps wool blends retain their shape.

Down Jackets
Down-filled insulation
Before washing
Check whether the care label permits machine washing. Empty pockets and close zippers and fastenings. Use a laundry bag only if appropriate for the garment and your machine.
Wash
Use a down-specific cleaner or a mild detergent suitable for down; avoid alkaline washing powders, bleach and fabric softener. If machine washing is permitted, choose a down or gentle cycle at no more than 40°C / 104°F, or the lower temperature on the label. Avoid high-speed spinning. If hand washing is permitted, soak briefly for about 15 minutes, gently clean soiled areas and press water out without twisting. Rinse thoroughly and wash separately from dark or color-bleeding items.
Dry & restore loft
Follow the care label. If air drying, lay flat or support the jacket in a shaded, ventilated place and gently separate clumps as it dries. If tumble drying is permitted, use low heat within the garment's stated limit, with clean dryer balls if suitable. Keep the drying temperature below 50°C / 122°F, and always follow any lower limit on the care label. Continue until both fabric and filling are completely dry before storing.
Everyday care
Do not dry-clean unless the garment's own label specifically instructs otherwise. Spot-clean when practical and wash when needed. After unpacking a compressed jacket, allow time for it to regain loft. If a feather protrudes, do not pull it out; gently draw it back from the inside. A slight natural down scent can occur, but persistent mustiness calls for checking that the filling is fully dry.
Store
Store clean, fully dry and loosely rather than under prolonged compression. Keep in a dry, ventilated place.

Fleece
Fleece jackets and midlayers
Hand wash
Check the care label first. Use a mild detergent and cool water no warmer than 40°C / 104°F. If soaking is needed, keep it brief—about 2–3 minutes. Gently wash, rinse well and press with a clean towel; do not wring.
Machine wash
If permitted, turn the garment inside out, close zippers and place it in a laundry bag. Choose a synthetic or delicate cycle. Wash separately from towels and other lint-shedding items. Avoid bleach; leave out fabric softener unless the garment label specifically allows it.
Dry
Reshape and dry flat in the shade to reduce stretching. Avoid high-temperature tumble drying. Do not iron or dry-clean. Follow any more restrictive instructions on the care label.
Reduce pilling
Limit friction from rough surfaces and other fleece layers. A lightweight, smooth outer layer can help protect the fleece during outdoor use. To remove pills, use a fabric shaver gently on a flat surface, following its instructions; avoid exposed blades that can cut the fabric. Remove loose lint with a lint roller.
