Softshell pants balance mobility, breathability and protection from wind and light moisture. They work especially well for cool-weather hiking, climbing and active winter use when fully waterproof pants would feel too warm.

Compare fabric weight, wind resistance, stretch, abrasion resistance, DWR treatment, ventilation and reinforced areas. Choose lighter fabrics for fast movement and denser weaves for exposed or rough terrain.

Softshell pants usually resist light moisture but are not fully waterproof. Their advantage is comfort during movement: they release heat better, stretch more easily and feel less noisy than many hardshell pants. Carry waterproof overtrousers when sustained rain is possible.
