Insulated pants add warmth to the lower body for winter camping, cold travel, snow activities and low-output periods. They can be worn as the main cold-weather pant or as an extra layer during breaks, depending on the construction.

Compare insulation type and amount, outer-fabric weather resistance, full or partial side zips, packability and reinforced areas. Synthetic insulation is often practical in damp conditions, while lighter designs are easier to carry as an emergency layer.

Insulation slows heat loss by trapping air. More insulation generally increases warmth but also adds bulk and reduces breathability. Side zips are especially useful because they allow ventilation and make over-pants easier to add without removing footwear.
