A hardshell jacket is your main barrier against wind and sustained rain or snow. It does not create much warmth by itself; instead, it protects the baselayer and insulation underneath, making it a cornerstone of a flexible outdoor layering system.

Compare waterproof and breathability ratings, 2.5-layer versus 3-layer construction, seam sealing, face-fabric durability, hood adjustment and ventilation. For regular mountain use, a robust 3-layer shell and well-designed hood can be more valuable than the lightest possible weight.

A waterproof membrane blocks liquid water while allowing some moisture vapor to escape. Fully taped seams prevent water entering through stitching, and pit zips provide direct ventilation when the membrane cannot release heat quickly enough during steep climbs.
