A rain jacket is a protective shell for wet and windy conditions. It should keep outside water from reaching your layers while allowing some internal moisture to escape, which is why waterproofing and breathability need to be considered together.

Compare waterproof and breathability ratings, seam sealing, 2.5-layer versus 3-layer construction, hood adjustment, ventilation, face-fabric durability and packability. For active hiking, pit zips and a secure hood can matter as much as headline ratings.

A higher waterproof rating generally resists greater water pressure, while breathability ratings estimate moisture-vapor transfer. Real comfort also depends on temperature, humidity, activity and ventilation. A waterproof jacket is not an insulating jacket, so add warmth separately.
