Choose fleece when breathability, quick drying, and comfort during continuous movement matter most. Grid fleece is especially efficient because its structure balances warmth with airflow. Choose a down or synthetic insulated jacket when you need more warmth for its weight, such as during rest stops or colder conditions. Synthetic insulation is generally more forgiving in damp weather; down excels in lightweight, packable warmth when kept dry.

Start with the weather and your activity level. Look at waterproof protection for rain, breathability and ventilation for active climbs, wind resistance for exposed routes, and weight or packability if the layer will spend time in your backpack. A softshell offers stretch and breathability in mostly dry conditions; a hardshell prioritizes dependable weather protection.

Water-repellent is not the same as waterproof. DWR helps droplets bead on the surface, but the fabric and seams do not create a full storm barrier. For prolonged rain, carry waterproof pants; for light moisture and active hiking, water-repellent pants often feel more comfortable.
